Rebekah and I honestly started our journey (without even realizing our passion for homesteading and self-sustainability) approximately 18 years ago at a one room school house in Berks County, Pennsylvania. We started with a handful of egg laying chickens, gardens, raising meat chickens, and a flock of two registered Olde English Southdown Babydoll Sheep. We spent 12 years at this property and fell in love with it. Rebekah expanded her knowledge of landscaping, gardening, canning, taking care of the home, and homeschooling (our one child at the time) responsibilities. As our family started growing, as much as we had fallen in love with our small property, the time came to look for a property with more acreage to accommodate our homesteading endeavors. We discovered a foreclosure (diamond in the rough!) property also located in Berks County with 4.25 acres and a stone home that dates back to the year 1790. It required a couple of years of back breaking, intense work to make this home livable, but with the help from friends and family we accomplished many indoor and outdoor projects to transform it into a homesteader's dream!
Our homestead has grown into a large herb/vegetable garden, a large hoop house, a flock seven Southdown Baby Doll Sheep, many more egg laying hens, a dairy cow, a steer, and meat rabbits! Rebekah continues to can/preserve food, make lotions, soaps, tending to the gardens/hoop house, and homeschooling our now 5 children!
Benjamin continues to be the muscle for the heavy lifting and moving of supplies and materials and being a helpful hand around the homestead. He also continues to practice full time as a registered nurse in a local emergency room and continues with his military service as a flight nurse in the United States Air Force Reserves.
We are expanding! We have decided to rent a ½ acre plot from our neighbor and are working to clear the land and turn it into a future CSA (community supported agriculture) for the year 2024! Our goal and mission are to provide the local community with high quality produce in the years to come! We strive to serve the community with what we have learned and be a resource for those interested in the homesteading world. The homesteading lifestyle is one that I would have never expected. However, it is one that we as a team fell in love with and as the years go on, we both realize this way of life is not something that is “in you” There must be a love/passion and a commitment to not only your family, but also to the animals and gardens. Rebekah and I have turned our “some people dream, and some people do” mentality into our reality of us doing what we have dreamed. People that come to visit are never in a hurry to leave what we have been blessed with and as a family we love that about where we are situated.
